Founded in 1906, Optimist Youth Homes & Family Services is among the largest non-profit child welfare agencies in California. We provide comprehensive, culturally sensitive therapeutic services to at-risk adolescents, youth and families. Optimist operates residential facilities throughout the Los Angeles area, as well as foster family agencies. Our main campus in Highland Park houses 100 boys. The residential program is supplemented by a non-public high school, an independent living program, aftercare program, and other cutting-edge mental health services. Our six-bed group homes are located in Eagle Rock, South Bay, the San Fernando Valley and Van Nuys. Our foster family agencies, located in Los Angeles, Long Beach, Orange County, Riverside County and Palmdale certify foster homes and provide clinical services to foster placements and their families.
The following positions are currently available:
Dorm/Group Home Youth Care Counselor
Locations: Highland Park, Carson, Mission Hills & Van Nuys.
The Youth Care Counselor (YCC) provides for the supervision, care and protection of all residents. As a member of the Residential Program’s treatment team, the YCC is an important agent in setting the tone, direction, and priorities of the residents’ treatment plans. The YCC helps develop an atmosphere within the Residential Program where residents can learn to make appropriate choices, improve their judgment and increase the probability of meeting their treatment goals. A large part of the YCC’s role involves the basic activities which most directly effect residents; their physical and emotional needs; social demands; training and limit setting.
Essential Job Duties:
1. Daily care, protection and supervision of residents.
2. Implements discipline and limit setting.
3. Provides role modeling, understanding, and guidance in order to promote (in the resident) a better understanding of himself/herself and the society in which he/she lives.
4. Provided for the residents emotional and physical well-being.
5. Familiarizes self with the principles of behavioral dynamics and group therapy to assist residents in handling their problems and working effectively with a group.
6. Charts the daily progress and maintains log notations and communications with therapist.
7. Attends and participates in mandatory training and in-services as required.
Independent Living Program Youth Care Counselor
Location: Highland Park
The Youth Care Counselor provides for the supervision, care and protection of all Independent Living Program (ILP) residents. As a member of the Residential Program’s treatment team, the Youth Care Counselor is an important agent in setting the tone, direction and helping to choose priorities for the residents. Creates an atmosphere within the Residential & ILP Programs where residents can learn to make appropriate choices, improve their judgment and increase the probability of meeting their treatment goals. A large part of the Youth Care Counselor’s role involves the basic activities which most directly effect residents; their physical and emotional needs; societal demands; their training and discipline. The primary focus for ILP residents is to actively seek and obtain employment.
Essential Job Duties:
1. Provides direct supervision of ILP residents.
2. Transports ILP residents in company vehicles to appointments, interviews, work, etc.
3. Provides assistance with daily independent living skills and training.
4. Assists in job training for residents.
5. Assists residents in obtaining housing.
6. Assists residents with aftercare services.
7. Maintains record keeping, incident logs, and medical log entries.
8. Administers and supervises house/apartment rules and discipline on a consistent level.
9. Supervises group/individual outings, whether for shopping, medical appointments, or
recreation.
Qualifications:
1. High School diploma is required. B.A./B.S. degree preferred and/or equivalent related
experience.
2. An educational background that will make it possible to earn the children’s respect and to
exemplify the values of education.
3. Personal characteristics to be able to work effectively with the children in placement as well as adequate knowledge, skills and experience.
4. Ability to be comfortable with the adolescents and be responsive to their needs.
5. Ability to accept the children’s parents regardless of their difference in values and standards of conduct.
6. Possesses the moral integrity, sense of values and a social commitment of the highest
standards as required of all staff dealing with adolescents.
7. All employees, regardless of position, serve as role models for children and adolescents who are served by our agencies. Therefore, each employee must at all times be emotionally stable and able to function effectively with children, adolescents and adults who may have mental or behavioral health problems. The staff must be able to demonstrate appropriate daily behavior, appropriate expression of emotions as well as appropriate role modeling. Hostility, aggression, and unnecessary or inappropriate physical and/or emotional expression are not acceptable.
All employees must be at least 21 years old and are subject to a criminal background check, reference check, physical, TB test and drug screen. A clean criminal background is required.
COMPENSATION:
$9.50-$12.00/hour, depending on position/qualifications. All full-time positions include an excellent benefits package including medical, dental, vision and life insurance, as well as paid
